The Divisional Police Officer(DPO) for Sakura Police Divisional Headquarters, Sagamu, Ogun State, CSP Roland K.Dahunsi has called on the leaders of Ileri Oluwa Area Community Development Committee (ACDC) in Offin Sagamu, to quickly set up Community Orientation Committee(COC) towards educating people on how to keep their community secured and peaceful, to curb the spate of kidnapping.
He made the advocacy during the official inauguration and presentation of certificate to the Ileri Oluwa Area Community Development Committee (ACDC) on Saturday, December 19.
He said since the ACDC comprised many CDAs and these CDAs do have regular meetings and would be giving the ACDC their community reports, it was a good thing to set it up.
'I want to implore you the Ileri-Oluwa ACDC to set up Community Orientation Committee. It is very important, because of our youths and some people who don't have time to be attending meetings of CDAs,
"So that they can be briefing and educating them on developments in their community. For example on kidnapping...May we never be kidnapped...Without the power and support of the people, the agents of government cannot succeed. It is the power you give us that we will be using," he reiterated.
He then urged the people to abide by the laws of government on the use of cars with tinted windows and the use of vehicles without number plates because of the spate of kidnapping in the country.
"It is already in Nigeria laws. Please, if you buy a new vehicle, try to register it and get the number plates for it, so that if you are looking for it, maybe it is stolen or so, and you report it, you will be able to tell us the number. And if we call licensing office, once they press a button they can see everything about the vehicle." He explained.
"It is now becoming a norm among many people in the society to be using vehicles without number plates. Some will even buy cars and tint the windows , making it difficult for people to see those who are inside. That's the reason the government is reminding us of the existing laws guiding the use of vehicles in that regard," he added.
He said those who were abducted recently in the community were carried away with vehicles having no number plates and those with tinted windows.
According to him, if the police see anyone who has permits for using tinted vehicles and discovered that they don't fall into the category of those recognized by law to use vehicles with tinted windows , they should stop them and ask them to tear off the tints from the vehicle themselves.
He disclosed that they(the police) have held security meetings with the royal fathers, the Elepe of Epe,Sagamu, and another in Akarigbo's palace.
He noted that for people not to claim ignorance of the laws and government efforts, they asked the Royal fathers to send out town criers in Sagamu recently to inform them of government decisions on the use of unregistered vehicles and tinted windows.
In spite of these efforts, some people were still claiming ignorance of awareness of the announcement made by the town criers.
"It is in view of all these that I'm urging the ACDC to form the Community Orientation Committee for the purpose of educating our people. This is because if there's crisis around, with teargas and sporadic shootings going on in this vicinity, nobody will be able to assemble here comfortably, for any meeting or an event like this." He explained further..
